From the streets of Port-au-Prince to the world stage at COP21 in Paris, 2015 was an incredible year for The Plastic Bank. Here are our highlights from the last year, thank you for being a part of it!
The Social Plastic movement took off and we have YOU to thank. The movement grew from a group of committed supporters to over a million Facebook fans and a million plus Twitter followers on our company accounts. Boardrooms around the world are listening closely to millions of people who are demanding that brands use Social Plastic in their manufacturing.
This movement turned into real excitement from the world’s biggest brands. We’ve been working closely with some of your favourite companies to bring Social Plastic to stores all over the world. We’re looking forward to announcing official partnerships in early in 2016.
We established a network of recycling markets in Haiti. Through partnerships with some amazing non-profits we have a network of collection centres throughout Haiti. Collectors are able to exchange plastic waste for cash and a number of items that help improve their lives; including charcoal stoves, cooking briquettes and a charge for their phone.
Solar power recycling markets are up and running. We’re installing innovative technology in our centres starting with solar panels to offer electricity to communities with no power. The solar panels will bring internet access to disadvantaged communities so that they can contribute creative solutions to bring millions out of poverty
Social Plastic is shipping! We’re bringing plastic from the streets and waterways of Haiti all the way back to the shelves in North America. We’re working with brands from California to Singapore who are excited to build a better world together.
Our team was invited to share the journey of The Plastic Bank with audiences around the world; including corporations, governments, non-profits and everything in between. We had the chance to speak to audiences in San Diego, Montreal, Lille, Geneva, Tbilisi and more.
We continued to grow our team. Along with an amazing ground team leading our efforts in Haiti we were thrilled to bring on new team members in Vancouver and California to help drive The Plastic Bank forward.
We made new partnerships in all sectors. We’re thrilled to have found a handful of organizations who want to build a better world together. World Vision will be the first to come see our operations in Haiti in 2016.
COP21 in Paris was an amazing way to cap the year off. We were honoured to win the Sustainia Community Award at the Climate Summit thanks to thousands of people who voted for The Plastic Bank as their favourite sustainability solution of 2015.
We learned and grew as an organization. With another year under our belt we’re more confident than ever that we are headed in the right direction. We’re looking forward to what 2016 will bring in our journey to make plastic waste a currency to alleviate poverty and prevent plastic from entering the ocean.
You can be a part of the Social Plastic® movement by proving the demand for Social Plastic® on Facebook or you can participate in our ask a brand to use Social Plastic® campaign. Through the sale of Social Plastic® we are able to pay an above market rate to collectors and recyclers in the developing world and provide an incentive for people to clean up the environment.
